No empty or soft-404 key pages
A link that opens is not the same as a page that helps. Empty key pages and soft 404s look like the firm is not finished.
What this is
A key page is About, Contact, Services, or the page your nav uses for those jobs. It should say, near the top, what it is for: who you are, how to reach you, or what you offer.
An empty shell is a page that returns a normal status but has almost no words, or says “Coming soon,” “Under construction,” or still has placeholder text. A soft 404 is a normal status whose title or body says the page was not found.
A real 404 is honest. A 200 that pretends the page exists is worse, because the menu promised something and the body shrugs.
Why it matters for trust
The stranger clicked a label they understood. If the page is blank or says it is missing, they doubt the rest of the site. They do not file it under “the developer will get to it.”
It also wastes the visit. They were ready to read who you are or to call. The empty page sends them back to search.
If a page is not ready, take it out of the menu. A missing link is cleaner than a promise you do not keep. When you publish, say who the page is for in the first lines. About should name the firm. Services should name the work. Contact should show how to reach a person. A heading with no paragraph under it still feels empty on a phone.
Do this
- Click About, Contact, and Services from the home page. Read the first screen of each.
- If a page says coming soon or has lorem text, either write the real page or remove it from the nav until it is real.
- If the title says “Page not found” but the address still loads, fix the page or return a true 404. Do not leave a soft miss on a key URL.
- Give About enough words to say who the firm is. A headline alone is a stub.
- Give Contact a phone or email, not only a shell form.
- Give Services a plain description of the work, not a title with no body.
How Free Trust Score treats this
Free Trust Score can still see that a key URL returned 200. That does not mean the page passed. An empty or coming-soon key page hurts. A 200 body that says the page was not found also hurts.
A page that states its purpose, with real words, helps. The scan is reading the page a stranger would read. It is not impressed by the status code alone.
