How reviews shape who gets hired

Buyers look you up before they call. What they find — or don’t — changes who feels safe.

The short version

People still hire on trust.
They just check trust online first.

A meeting can go well. The fee can be fair. The work can be stronger.
Then they say: We felt more comfortable with the other firm.

Often that comfort is not chemistry. It is proof they could see in ten minutes.

What buyers actually do

Hinge Research Institute asked more than 1,000 professional services buyers how they “check out” a firm before they hire.

About 81% look at the firm’s website.

About 63% search online (they Google you).

On average they use more than three ways to check.

So your craft in the room is not the whole story. Your public record sits in the room with you.

Why reviews matter in that check

When someone searches your name, they are asking simple questions:

  • Have other clients said this went well?
  • Is there enough written proof to feel safe?
  • Does another firm show more?

Few reviews do not mean bad work.
They do mean a stranger has less to lean on.

Negative reviews can knock a referred firm out before the first call. Positive, recent reviews do the opposite: they make “yes” easier.

You do not need hundreds. You need honest asks after finished work, so real clients can speak if they choose.

The part most firms miss

Happy clients rarely post on their own.

Hinge also found that about 72% of clients who did not refer said the main reason was simple: nobody asked.

No ask → no new review → less to show on the next search → “we felt more comfortable with them.”

What to do

  1. When a job ends, send a short, honest ask.
  2. You read it. You edit it. You send it — or you don’t.
  3. Nothing goes to a client until you say yes.
  4. After five approved sends, you can turn on auto-send if you want. Pause anytime.
